Proposal from Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), March 2013

  1. Proposal for Cook Basin

Note by the proposer :

Please refer to our name proposal dated 6 March 2013, for the basin between the Antarctic Peninsula and Kerguelen Plateau, not yet named in the GEBCO gazetteer. Recently we have seen that the name "Weddell-Enderby Basin" is in some extent used for this feature, although apparently not part of any gazetteer. For the reasons mentioned in our proposal, we would still suggest "Cook Basin", but if the naming committee believe "Weddell-Enderby Basin" is a better choice due to any current use, we would fully understand.

Additional information from the proposer (Aug 2016):

While we suggested naming the feature Cook Basin, we later added that we would understand if the name Weddell-Enderby Basin would be chosen instead. Beyond this, we don't agree that Weddell Basin was the best choice, particularly because the basin comprises both Weddell and Enderby Abyssal Plains. Therefore we cannot change our proposal, unfortunately. As a consequence, I should not be listed as the proposer for Weddell Basin in the gazetteer. Sorry for any inconvenience. Anders Skoglund.
